02What it is

A cesarean section is a surgical procedure in which a baby is delivered through an incision in the mother's abdominal wall and the wall of the uterus. It is usually performed under spinal or epidural anaesthesia and typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. It may be planned in advance or carried out as an emergency.

03Who it's for

A C-section may be recommended for a previous cesarean delivery, a multiple pregnancy, a breech or transverse baby that cannot be turned, placenta previa blocking the cervix, or other complications that make vaginal delivery unsafe. It may also be chosen electively after discussion.

04How we diagnose

Dr. Aldam reviews your pregnancy, medical history and the baby's position and health to decide whether a planned or emergency cesarean is right for you. Your preferences matter — a cesarean is only performed with your written consent after a full discussion of the reasons and options.

05How we treat

The baby is delivered under spinal or epidural anaesthesia through a low horizontal incision (the 'bikini line', which heals faster with less visible scarring) or, in specific emergencies, a vertical incision. After delivery the layers are closed carefully. A hospital stay of about 2 to 5 days is usual, with rest, gentle walking, good hydration and wound care during recovery.

Questions, answered

The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes and is performed under spinal or epidural anaesthesia so you stay awake and comfortable.

A cesarean is only performed with your written consent. Dr. Aldam will discuss the reasons, benefits and options so you can decide together.

A low horizontal 'bikini line' incision is used most often and heals faster with less scarring; a vertical incision is reserved for specific emergencies or complications.

A stay of about 2 to 5 days is usual, with rest, gentle walking, good hydration and wound care supporting your recovery.

Rest, take gentle daily walks, stay hydrated, eat a high-fibre diet and care for the wound as advised, contacting the clinic with any concerns.
