02What it is

Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are benign growths of muscle and connective tissue in the wall of the uterus. They vary widely in size, from a few millimetres to very large, and are common; many cause no problems while others lead to noticeable symptoms.

03Who it's for

For women with heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination or bladder difficulty, constipation, back or leg pain, or fertility problems and recurrent miscarriage. Risk is higher after age 30, with a family history, or with higher body weight.

04How we diagnose

Dr. Aldam uses imaging such as ultrasound and, when needed, MRI to determine the size, number and location of fibroids. This is paired with clear counseling so you understand your condition and the options available.

05How we treat

Treatment depends on your symptoms and fertility plans. Small, symptom-free fibroids may just be monitored. Options include hormonal or GnRH agonist medication, uterine artery embolization, myomectomy to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus, or hysterectomy in severe cases.

Good to know

Questions, answered

No. Uterine fibroids are benign growths of the uterine wall, not cancer.

No. Small fibroids that cause no symptoms are often just monitored. Treatment is offered when they affect your quality of life or fertility.

Yes. Myomectomy removes fibroids while preserving the uterus, and embolization shrinks them by reducing their blood supply.

They can contribute to fertility problems or recurrent miscarriage in some women. Dr. Aldam will tailor treatment to protect your fertility goals.

They are more common in women over 30, those with a family history, and those with higher body weight.
