02What it is

A high-risk pregnancy is one that involves heightened health risks for the expectant mother, the fetus, or both. Importantly, this designation does not guarantee that complications will occur — it simply means the pregnancy benefits from closer monitoring and specialist care to keep mother and baby well.

03Who it's for

For women with factors such as age over 35 or under 17, chronic conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, heart, kidney or autoimmune disease), a multiple pregnancy, previous complications (preterm birth, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, recurrent miscarriage), certain infections, fetal growth or placental concerns, genetic conditions, or lifestyle factors such as smoking.

04How we diagnose

Assessment starts with thorough, early prenatal care. Dr. Aldam reviews your history and risk factors and uses blood and urine tests, ultrasound imaging, non-stress testing and biophysical profiles that track the baby's breathing, movement and amniotic fluid to monitor mother and baby closely.

05How we treat

Management is individualised and may include home blood-pressure monitoring, more frequent clinic visits and specialist consultations, additional fetal evaluations, review of medications for pre-existing conditions, and maternal-fetal medicine input. If risks increase, planned labour induction or cesarean delivery may be recommended to keep mother and baby safe.
