02What it is

Infertility is generally defined as being unable to fall pregnant, or to carry a pregnancy to a live birth, after about a year of regular intercourse without contraception. It affects roughly one in six people worldwide and can involve causes in either partner. Fertility also declines naturally with age, decreasing by around 3–5% each year after 30 and more markedly after 40.

03Who it's for

This service is for women under 35 who haven't conceived after a year of trying, women over 35 who haven't conceived after six months, and those with recurrent miscarriage (two or more) or previous unsuccessful fertility treatment. Causes can include structural issues such as fibroids, polyps or blocked tubes, reduced egg quantity or quality, and ovulation disorders from hormonal, thyroid or other conditions.

04How we diagnose

Assessment begins with a consultation and history, then targeted tests to find the cause. These may include blood tests to detect hormonal abnormalities and ovarian or cervical issues, hysterosalpingography (HSG) using dye or saline to check for blocked fallopian tubes, and laparoscopy to examine the pelvis for conditions such as endometriosis.

05How we treat

Treatment depends on the cause identified. Where structural issues are found, laparoscopic surgery can repair uterine abnormalities, remove polyps or fibroids, and tubal surgery can address blocked or fluid-filled tubes. Assisted reproductive technologies — including intrauterine insemination and IVF — may be combined with fertility medication and hormonal therapy, and egg donation is available where appropriate. The plan is personalized to you.
