02What it is

Laparoscopic gynecological surgery is a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery. A slender, lighted tube with a camera (a laparoscope) is passed through a small abdominal incision so the pelvic area can be viewed on a monitor. This allows both diagnosis and treatment through keyhole incisions, avoiding the need for large, exploratory open surgery.

03Who it's for

Laparoscopy may help women with unexplained pelvic pain, unexplained infertility, a history of pelvic infection, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, or reproductive cancers. It can be used to investigate a condition and, in the same setting, to treat it.

04How we diagnose

Diagnostic laparoscopy lets Dr. Aldam see the internal pelvic structures directly through the camera, confirming the presence of gynecological conditions without exploratory open surgery. It follows a consultation and any needed imaging, so surgery is planned around a clear picture of your anatomy.

05How we treat

During the procedure a small incision is made below the navel, carbon dioxide gas gently expands the abdomen for a clear view, and the laparoscope is inserted through a trocar; a few additional tiny incisions may be made for instruments. Through these, Dr. Aldam can remove ovarian cysts or fibroids, treat endometrial tissue, block blood flow to fibroids, or remove the uterus or ovaries when needed. The keyhole approach means less pain and scarring, fewer complications and a faster recovery.
