STD Testing

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections spread mainly through sexual contact and are caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. They can pass through bodily fluids during vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse, and importantly they do not always cause symptoms — so a person may be infectious without knowing it.

Testing is recommended for anyone who is sexually active, especially those with multiple partners or unprotected exposure. Warning signs, when present, can include genital sores or bumps, painful urination, abnormal discharge, unusual vaginal bleeding, fever and pelvic pain, or a rash on the trunk, hands, or feet.

Testing is straightforward and mostly painless. Depending on the infection, it may involve a urine test (for chlamydia and gonorrhea), a blood test (for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B), a cheek swab, a fluid sample from discharge or a sore, or a swab from the genital, anal, or throat area. The clinic emphasizes confidential, private testing.

Treatment depends on the cause. Bacterial and parasitic infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis can be cured with antibiotics — the full course must be completed and sexual contact avoided until healing. Viral infections such as herpes and HIV are managed with antiviral medication that reduces outbreaks and viral load, though transmission can still be possible.
